Kids Surf Lessons in Bali: Age, Safety & What to Expect at Kuta Beach

If you’re visiting Bali with family and wondering whether the kids can join in on the surfing fun — the answer is a resounding yes! Kuta Beach is one of the most family-friendly surf spots in the world, and teaching children to surf is one of the most rewarding experiences we offer at Krisna Surf Lesson.

In this guide, I’ll answer all the common questions parents ask about kids surf lessons in Bali — from the minimum age, to safety, to what to expect during the lesson.

What is the Minimum Age for Surf Lessons in Bali?

At Krisna Surf Lesson, we welcome children from 5 years old. Kids this age are naturally fearless in the water and often pick up surfing faster than adults — their low centre of gravity and natural flexibility is a real advantage!

For children under 8 years old, we recommend a private lesson where the instructor can give the child 100% individual attention and adapt the pace entirely to the child’s comfort level. Safety is always our absolute top priority.

Is Kuta Beach Safe for Children?

Kuta Beach is one of the safest surf beaches in Bali for children, for several reasons:

  • Gentle, slow waves — the waves at Kuta Beach are small and rolling, perfect for young beginners
  • Sandy bottom — unlike reef breaks, Kuta has a sand bottom that is much safer for falls
  • Warm, shallow water — lessons take place in shallow water where kids can touch the bottom comfortably
  • Foam surfboards — all children learn on soft foam boards that won’t hurt if there’s any contact
  • Dedicated instructor — in a private lesson, the instructor is in the water with your child at all times

As an instructor, I’m always in the water directly next to young children, and I only let them attempt waves that I’ve assessed as completely safe for their level.

What Happens During a Kids Surf Lesson?

Here’s what a typical private surf lesson looks like for a child at Kuta Beach:

1. Beach Introduction (15 minutes)

We start on the sand, away from the water, where everything is calm and relaxed. I’ll introduce myself to the child, explain how surfing works in simple and fun language, and show them the basic movements: lying on the board, paddling, and the “pop up” (standing up). Kids love this part — we make it playful and exciting.

2. Into the Shallow Water (20 minutes)

Once the child feels comfortable with the movements on the sand, we move into very shallow water — knee to waist deep. Here they practice getting used to the board in the water, maintaining balance, and learning what waves feel like without any pressure to “perform.”

3. Riding First Waves (60–75 minutes)

This is the fun part! I’ll push the child onto small, gentle waves and guide them through standing up. Most children successfully stand up and ride a wave within their very first lesson. The joy on their faces when they ride their first wave is absolutely priceless — and usually gets the parents cheering from the beach!

Can Parents Join the Lesson?

Absolutely! Many families book parent-and-child surf lessons together, and it’s one of our most popular options. Surfing together as a family creates memories that last a lifetime. We can accommodate two students per instructor, or book separate private instructors for each family member for the fastest learning experience.

What Should Children Wear for Surf Lessons?

For kids surf lessons at Kuta Beach, we recommend:

  • Rash guard or long-sleeve swim shirt — protects from sunburn and minor board rash
  • Swim shorts or bikini bottoms — comfortable and flexible for movement
  • Reef shoes (optional) — some children feel more comfortable with water shoes for extra grip
  • Waterproof sunscreen SPF 50+ — applied before arriving at the beach

We provide surfboards and all necessary equipment. You just need to bring your child, their swimwear, sunscreen, and plenty of enthusiasm!

How Many Surf Lessons Do Kids Need?

Children often progress faster than adults in surfing because they’re naturally fearless and adaptable. Many kids can ride waves independently after just 3–5 lessons. If you’re on a week-long Bali holiday, we recommend booking 3 lessons across the week — this gives enough rest between sessions while building real skills and confidence.
