Planning a surf trip to Bali and wondering what to expect? Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who’s tried surfing before, Bali has something for every level. But before you book your surf lesson in Kuta Beach Bali, there are a few things your instructor wishes every tourist knew before getting in the water.
As a local surf instructor based at Kuta Beach, I’ve taught hundreds of tourists from all over the world. Here are the 7 most important things I tell every single student before their first surf lesson in Bali.
1. You Don’t Need Any Experience to Start Surfing in Bali
This is the number one concern I hear from new students: “Is it okay if I’ve never surfed before?” The answer is absolutely yes. Kuta Beach was literally designed for beginners. The waves here are gentle, slow-rolling, and forgiving — perfect for your very first time on a surfboard.
You don’t need to be a strong swimmer, you don’t need to be fit, and you definitely don’t need any surfing experience. As we explain in our guide on whether Kuta Beach is good for beginner surfing, all you need is enthusiasm and the willingness to try. Standing up on a surfboard and riding your first wave is one of the most incredible feelings in the world.
2. Private Lessons Are Worth Every Rupiah
Many tourists choose group surf lessons to save money, and I completely understand. But here’s the honest truth: private surf lessons will get you to your first wave at least twice as fast.
In a group lesson, the instructor is split between multiple students. In a private 1-on-1 lesson, I’m watching every single wave you attempt, giving you instant feedback, choosing the perfect waves for your level, and pushing you at exactly the right pace. Check our private lesson packages — the price difference versus a group lesson is less than you might think, and the results are dramatically better. According to Surfer Today, 1-on-1 coaching is the single fastest way to improve in the water.
3. The Best Time to Surf at Kuta Beach is Early Morning
Kuta Beach gets busy. Very busy. By mid-morning, especially during peak tourist season, the lineup can be crowded with surfers of all levels.
The best time for your surf lesson is between 7am and 9am. For more details on timing, read our complete guide on the best time to surf in Kuta Beach Bali. The waves are typically cleaner and more consistent in the morning, the water is calmer, and there are fewer people in the water.
4. Apply Waterproof Sunscreen BEFORE You Get to the Beach
This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many students forget this one. The Bali sun is intense — especially when you’re spending 2 hours in the water. Even on cloudy days, UV rays reflect off the water and can burn you quickly.
Apply SPF 50+ waterproof sunscreen at least 20 minutes before your lesson, and reapply it on your face and neck during any breaks. Pay special attention to the back of your neck, the tops of your feet, and the backs of your legs. Also make sure you’re wearing the right gear — our guide on what to wear for surfing in Bali covers everything you need to know about sun protection in the water.
5. Stay Hydrated — Bring Water to the Beach
Surfing is a physical workout, especially when you’re learning. You’ll be paddling, popping up, swimming back out through the whitewash, and repeating this cycle for 2 hours straight. You’ll sweat more than you realise, even though you’re surrounded by water.
Bring at least 1 litre of fresh water to your surf lesson. According to the World Health Organization, staying hydrated during physical activity is critical for performance and safety. We provide mineral water as part of our lesson package at Krisna Surf Lesson, but having extra water on the beach is always a good idea in Bali’s heat.
6. Don’t Fight the Waves — Work With Them
The most common beginner mistake I see is students tensing up and fighting against the ocean when a wave comes. The ocean is always more powerful than you — trying to fight it wastes energy and increases your chances of getting hurt.
I’ll teach you the right way to fall off your board safely, how to dive under waves as they approach, and how to use the ocean’s energy to your advantage. Learning to relax in the water is one of the most important and underrated surf skills for beginners. This is also one of the reasons learning to surf in Kuta Bali with a qualified instructor makes such a difference — a good teacher spots tension immediately and helps you correct it.
7. Commit to at Least 3 Lessons for Real Progress
One surf lesson in Bali is an incredible experience and you’ll almost certainly stand up and ride a wave. But if you really want to feel like a surfer — not just a tourist who tried surfing once — commit to at least 3 lessons.
By your third lesson, you’ll start to feel the rhythm of the ocean, your pop-up will become automatic, and you’ll begin reading which waves to go for. Curious about how long it actually takes to learn to surf in Bali? We break it down honestly in our dedicated guide.
Bonus Tip: Book a Local, Certified Instructor
Kuta Beach has many surf instructors — but not all instructors are the same. Look for someone who is certified, speaks English well, and has experience teaching complete beginners. A great instructor will make you feel safe, confident, and excited every step of the way.
At Krisna Surf Lesson, we’ve been teaching tourists to surf at Kuta Beach for years. Every lesson is private (1 instructor for 1 student), includes all equipment, and is run by a certified local instructor who genuinely loves what they do.
