What Surfboard Should a Beginner Use in Bali

What Surfboard Should a Beginner Use in Bali? (Complete Guide)

Choosing the right surf board can make the difference between standing up on your first wave or spending the whole lesson struggling in the water. As a beginner, the board you use matters more than almost anything else — and unfortunately, many first-time surfers in Bali don’t know this until after their lesson.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly what kind of surfboard is best for beginners in Bali, why it matters so much, and what you can expect when you take a surf lesson at Kuta Beach.

Why Surfboard Choice Matters for Beginners

Advanced surfers ride short, narrow boards that are highly responsive. But for beginners, these boards are extremely difficult to balance on and nearly impossible to learn with.

As a beginner, you need a board that is stable, buoyant, and forgiving. The right board will help you catch waves more easily, give you a stable platform to stand up on, and allow you to practice your technique without constantly falling off. The wrong board will frustrate you and slow your progress dramatically.

The Best Surfboard for Beginners: The Foam Longboard (Foamie)

The best surfboard for absolute beginners is a foam softboard longboard — often called a “foamie.” Here’s why:

  • Safe — the soft foam construction means if the board hits you, it won’t cut or seriously injure you
  • Stable — the wide, long shape gives you maximum platform to balance on
  • Buoyant — foam boards float very well, making it easier to catch small waves
  • Forgiving — small mistakes in balance and timing won’t immediately dump you in the water

At Krisna Surf Lesson, all our beginner students start on foam longboards. These boards are typically 8–9 feet long and around 22–24 inches wide — giving you a large, stable surface to learn the fundamentals on.

Surfboard Size Guide for Beginners

Not all foam boards are the same — the right size depends on your height and weight. Here’s a general guide:

Your WeightRecommended Board LengthBoard Type
Under 60kg7–8 feetFoam longboard / Mini Mal
60–80kg8–9 feetFoam longboard
80–100kg9–10 feetLarge foam longboard
Over 100kg10+ feetExtra large foam board

When you book a surf lesson with us, your instructor will assess your size and ability and select the perfect board for you. You don’t need to worry about this at all — we’ve got you covered.

When Do You Graduate to a Shorter Board?

A very common question from enthusiastic beginners: “When can I try a shortboard?” The honest answer is — after you can consistently ride a longboard, generate your own speed on waves, and perform basic turns.

For most people, this happens after many sessions of regular surfing — not after one or two lessons. Switching to a shortboard too early is the number one reason beginners get frustrated and give up. Stay on the foamie until you’ve truly mastered it. The progression will feel natural when the time is right.

What About Renting Your Own Board in Bali?

If you’re planning to surf independently in Bali (outside of lessons), you can rent boards from many surf shops along Kuta Beach. Expect to pay around 50,000–100,000 IDR per hour for a foam longboard rental.

However, for your first experiences in Bali, we strongly recommend taking lessons rather than renting and going out alone. Without proper instruction, it’s very easy to develop bad habits that are hard to fix later, and it can also be unsafe if you don’t know how to read ocean conditions and surf etiquette.

Do I Need to Bring My Own Surfboard to Bali?

Absolutely not! You do not need to bring a surfboard to Bali. All surf lessons at Krisna Surf Lesson include a surfboard (and wetsuit/rashguard if needed). We provide the perfect board for your level, properly waxed and ready to go.

Travelling with a surfboard adds significant baggage costs and hassle to your trip. Save yourself the trouble — everything you need is provided right here at Kuta Beach.
